Here's a recent question from a Canadian visitor:
After a great meal at Brophy Bros. I took a little tour of your city. I was surprised to see that the local hospital opened its doors back in the 1800’s. It also has an unusual name, Cottage Hospital. What is the history of this place?
Wealthy tourists began to arrive in Santa Barbara after the elegant Arlington Hotel was completed in 1875. The absence of good medical care, however, was a drawback for many would-be visitors. To raise money to build a hospital, a fund drive was conducted in 1888. The new hospital was envisioned as a group of lovely “cottages” that would have a home- like feel. This original plan for multiple buildings was abandoned, however, when it proved to be too costly. It was decided that the name Cottage Hospital should be retained because of the homey image it projected.
